The Science Diplomacy Center™ (SDC) applied for membership to the University of the Arctic (UArctic) because of diverse synergies and long-standing UArctic connections. The SDC was approved as a new UArctic member at the 2023 UArctic Assembly meeting in Québec City in May 2023.
The focus of the collaboration involves the triangulation of education, research and leadership with science diplomacy. This triangulation – involving informed decisionmaking and common-interest building skills, methods and theory – has been accelerating with UArctic since the 2017 Science policy forum on The Arctic Science Agreement Propels Science Diplomacy, in advance of the 2018 UArctic Congress Declaration:
“To move towards an Empowered North – with Shared Voices, we delegates of the UArctic Congress, representing the membership of UArctic, assembled Oulu and Helsinki, Finland from September 3-7, 2018, declare the following:
1. We continue to work in close partnership with the Arctic Council to support science-informed decision-making, science advice, and science diplomacy.”
The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a network of universities, colleges, research institutes, and other organizations concerned with education and research in and about the North. It builds and strengthens collective resources and infrastructures that enable member institutions to better serve their constituents and their regions. Through cooperation in education, research, and outreach we enhance human capacity in the North, promote viable communities and sustainable economies, and forge global partnerships. Created through the Arctic Council, UArctic is committed to upholding its principles of sustainable development as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. UArctic is constituted as an international association based in Finland.
The Center looks forward to working closely with the UArctic network.
