The WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT is on November 10th, as initiated in 2001 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), reaffirming each year the commitment to attain goals proclaimed in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge from the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest:
- Science for knowledge; knowledge for progress
- Science for peace
- Science for development
- Science in society and science for society
The coupling of science for peace and development reflects our shared journey as a globally-interconnected civilization – progressively building common interests with inclusion (who, what, when, where, why and how) and discovery that springs from the natural sciences, social sciences and Indigenous knowledge at personal-to-planetary levels.
Science is hope and the antidote to overcome fear in our world. Science with society (Figure) is a path for peace and development to celebrate across time and space as well as cultures and nations – independent of geopolitics – ultimately for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.
