Professor Lawrence E. Susskind

Professor Lawrence Susskind is the Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (dusp.mit.edu) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has served as a member of the faculty for more than fifty years and created MIT’s graduate program in Environmental Policy and Planning. He has supervised more than 70 doctoral students. At MIT, he heads the Science Impact Collaborative (scienceimpact.mit.edu), an interdisciplinary lab, that undertakes action-research to implement strategies to protect critical urban infrastructure from cyberattack, overcoming the opposition to the siting of renewable energy facilities, assisting coastal communities in their efforts to adapt to climate change, ensuring the availability of clean drinking water at affordable prices in older American cities (with Gabriella Carolini), learning about environmental planning from indigenous communities, and sharing with other countries efforts to promote sustainable city development in Malaysia (in conjunction with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia). Professor Susskind is co-founder of the inter-university Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School (pon.harvard.edu) where he serves as Director of the Teaching Negotiation Resource Center (TNRC), Vice-Chair for Pedagogy and has taught executive education programs in Negotiation and Leadership, Advanced Mediation and designed PON’s Negotiation Master Class.  He is also founder, the first Executive Director and current Board Member of the Consensus Building Institute (cbi.org), a not-for-profit that provides mediation services in some of the most contentious resource management disputes around the world. Professor Susskind is the author or co-author of more than twenty books in six languages including Environmental Diplomacy (with Saleem Ali), Oxford, 2016; Consensus Building Handbook (with Sarah McKearnan and Jennifer Thomas-Larmer), Sage, 1999; Water Diplomacy (with Shafiqul Islam), Resources for the Future, 2014; Transboundary Environmental Negotiation (with William Moomaw and Kevin Gallagher), Jossey-Bass, 2002; and Judicial Dispute Resolution: New Ways for Judges To Ensure Justice (with William Tilleman and Nicolas Parra Herrera), Anthem, forthcoming in 2023.
